Elijah L. Lewis: In Memoriam

Friends of Inscape is heartbroken that Elijah L. Lewis, the youngest board member of Inscape’s own Sankofa Theater, was tragically and violently taken from us on April 1, 2023.

Elijah was an outspoken activist and touched many lives with his hopeful energy. He was passionately committed to making positive change in his community, and he was a spirited connector who wanted everyone to thrive. His loss is mourned deeply by all who had the privilege to know him.

The artist Theaster Gates speaks of the spirit of belief that manifests the impossible to be possible.  Elijah Lewis held that spirit of belief in everything he did, from working on the homeless crisis, to producing cultural community events, to bringing people together and uplifting the Black community. We were surprised to learn Elijah was 23 years young as he had already done so much in his short time here.

You can honor Elijah by supporting his family through this go fund me campaign and follow @sankofatheater to learn of upcoming ways to support.

Through his Ethereal Vision production company, Elijah had planned a comedy showcase for April 20th which will now be held in his honor at the Sankofa Theater. More info and tickets are available here.
A Converge Media interview with Elijah at the Sankofa Theater is available to watch here.
